I hope that when readers finish my book they will understand what my family accomplished during what was one of the darkest and most trying periods in the history of America. My goal was to write a novel that would leave readers with a deeper appreciation for what people living in Eastern Kentucky went through during the Civil War. Rebel Shade’s father, Judge Alfred Combs, was one of the most prosperous men living in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Tragically, my family never fully recovered their land and wealth once the war was over. Nevertheless, the Combs, Nobel and Landrum families, in particular, developed a community in and around Clayhole, Kentucky that produced many successful family members in the fields of medicine, education and business for several generations to come. I am just one of those individuals, therefore it is a pleasure to share my family’s story with you.
